Channeling my Inner Khaleesi

Monday, October 31, 2016

For this year's Halloween costume I decided to be Daenerys Targaryean from Game of Thrones! I'm a huge fan of the show and Daenerys happens to be my favorite character.
Top: H&M // Skirt: Urban Outfitters // Brown Shirt tied on waist: I used leftover fabric // Boots: Madden Girl // Wig: Amazon // Dragon: Spirit Halloween
I chose to go with Daenerys's Dothraki outfit which consists earthy tones and distressed looking shoes. To achieve her iconic icy blonde hair I wore a long blonde wig and added a few braids. For the costume to truly represent the mother of dragons I of course had to have a dragon with me! If you look closely you can see him sitting on my shoulder.

Witches Brew Mini Cupcakes

witches brew mini cauldron cupcakes halloween sugarly baking chocolate devil's food cake buttercream
Mini cauldrons: Party City
These are my favorite Halloween dessert to make because they are just so adorable and spooky at the same time. I started making these witches brew cupcakes last year and they have definitely become a tradition for Halloween.
To make these cupcakes I make one batch of Devil's food cake mix (See my post here on how to kick up any cake mix a notch). I top it with a vanilla buttercream (I love this recipe) dyed green and sprinkle little sugar pearls to look like bubbles on top. Then of course I add a witches hat to finish it off.
note: I recommend stuffing the bottom of the cauldrons with tissue paper to ensure your mini cupcakes don't fall through.

All About my Favorite Hair Extensions

favorite best bellami hair extensions piccolina 18in sugarly beauty
I know a lot of people struggle with having thin hair, damaged hair or hair that just won't grow and I know just how frustrating it can be. My hair is naturally very fine and is also very resistant to growing. I discovered clip-in hair extensions a few years ago and to this day, I still wear clip-ins every single day. They take my hair from thin and wispy to thick and voluminous in a matter of minutes.

Two years ago I tried clip-in hair extensions for the first time. I ordered from a brand online that was a bit less expensive than other brands. Since I was just going for extra volume, I cut the extensions to my exact hair length. My hair did look thicker than usual but theses extensions wore out pretty fast and it wasn't too noticeable of a difference from my natural hair. However, the next pair of hair extensions I ordered were from Bellami, and boy were they a huge improvement! I had seen some of favorite beauty gurus wearing Bellami hair extensions and had heard they were the top of the line brand to wear. I cut these extensions to just slightly longer than my natural hair length and the volume it added was unbelievable! Theses extensions added about three times the volume than my previous set did. People couldn't tell I had hair extensions in but I was getting compliments all the time on how amazing my hair looked!

I'm wearing the Bellami 18in Piccolina Set (custom colored) To see all of their extensions options visit
I recently decided I wanted to wear longer extensions and ordered the 18in Piccolina set from Bellami, and this time I left them the full length. I applied them the same way I applied the shorter extensions and my hair blended into the longer extensions seamlessly! I never thought I could wear longer extensions without them tugging on my hair all day without or being noticeable, but these truly look so natural and I can't feel a thing when I have them in. Compared to the other hair extensions brands I've tried, Bellami extensions are by far the thickest from top to bottom and the longest lasting. If you're looking to get extensions for a longer look or even just more volume without the added length, I highly recommend getting them from Bellami.

DIY Bat Cupcakes

chocolate buttercream bat cupcakes diy halloween sugarly baking wrapper

With Halloween around the corner, I want to share some cute and easy Halloween dessert ideas with you all. These little bat cupcakes are so fun to serve at Halloween parties and they are really easy to make! For these cupcakes, I used my all time favorite chocolate buttercream recipe that I have perfected over the years and today I'm sharing it with you! This cupcake recipe couldn't be easier, the frosting can be made in one bowl in just a matter of minutes and the cake is made from a box mix! I love homemade cake but sometimes using a box mix is just the right taste I'm looking for. I'm also showing you how to kick up the box mix a notch to taste even more scrumptious!

Bat Cupcakes Recipe:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix ( I use Betty Crocker Super Moist Yellow Cake Mix)
  • The amount of eggs that the box calls for
  • Instead of using water as the box calls for, use milk (use the same amount of milk
  • Instead of using oil as the box calls for, use melted butter
  • Add 1 tsp vanilla extract
Bake as directed on the box.

My Chocolate Buttercream Recipe:

  • 1 cup (16 tbsp) unsalted butter
  • 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3-4 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp (not teaspoon) vanilla extract
Cream butter until smooth. Add in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder gradually. Add in the vanilla and milk until frosting is fluffy. Frost the cupcakes with a large round piping tip.

DIY Bat wings and cupcake wrapper:

You will need:
  • Thick black paper
  • Black and white striped paper (If you cant find this you can cut out the wrapper from just the white paper then cut out the stripes from the black paper and glue them on)
    • Tip: I used a Sephora bag because it had the perfcet black and white stripes and was thick enough to use as a cupcake wrapper!
  • White paper for the fangs
  • Glue or tape
  • Googly eye sprinkles
To make the bat wings, draw out two wings on thick black paper and cut out. I've included a stencil to trace for the cupcake wrapper here. To make the cupcake wrapper trace the stencil on your striped paper and cut out. Fasten the wrapper around your cupcake with tape or glue. Stick the bat wings on the sides of the frosting, the googly eyes in the center of the frosting and the fangs underneath and you're all done!

Donut Bar, San Diego CA
T-shirt: Target // Corduroy skirt: Urban Outfitters // Cardigan: Brandy Melville // Boots: Steve Madden // Backpack: Urban Outfitters
I've heard of the yummy donuts from Donut Bar here in San Diego for years so I finally decided to try them out and see what they were all about! To my luck there was no line the day I went! Donut bar is so popular here the line often wraps around the block. They have the most unique flavors from poptart filled donuts to maple bacon donut bars! They way they decorate the donuts is also so festive! They had so many Halloween themed donuts including my favorite which was a red velvet cake donut shaped like a skull and filled with cream cheese frosting. If you're ever in the area I recommend checking them out!
Side note: If you guys saw my last style post I showed you guys one of the urban outfitters corduroy skirts that I'm absolutely obsessed with! This is the hunter green color which I love pairing with tall black suede boots! They come in a few other super cute shades too.

Halloween Party Invitations

Skeleton Halloween invites can be purchases here
For this year's Halloween party I wanted to send out good old fashioned physical invitations, so I searched high and low for the spookiest invites I could find. This year's party is a skeleton theme and I'm mostly using black and white for all my party decor, so I wanted to find the perfect invite to match. I found these awesome invitations on etsy from the lovely shop, Anna Lou Avenue. Her shop has my favorite selection of Halloween invites. She has a common theme of skeletons for all of her invites. If you're looking for Halloween invites for your party I recommend checking her shop out! I can't wait to show you guys more of what my Halloween party will entail!

Bates Nut Farm

Monday, October 17, 2016

If you live in the San Diego area than you know that Bates Nut Farm is the number one pumpkin patch you have to visit in Autumn. I used to go to Bates Nut Farm all the time growing up and have fond memories of picking pumpkins off the vine and seeing all the adorable animals they had there. I hadn't been back since I was younger and Bates now has live bands, even more pumpkin fields, a petting zoo and a whole farmers market full of food booths and fall activities. If you're going to be in Southern California this fall I  highly recommend checking out Bates Nut Farm!
Top: Madewell (similar) // Skirt: Urban Outfitters // Boots: Madden Girl
I've also been in love with this corduroy skirt for the fall season! I have been searching high and low for the perfect corduroy skirt for months now and I finally found the best fitting, most comfortable and all around cutest skirt! The reason I love this skirt is because it is more form fitting than most and also has stretch to it. I personally don't favor how circle skirts look on me and unfortunately that's the fit that most corduroy skirts come in. This skirt has more of a straight fit to it which I absolutely love. I'll admit, I had to get it in multiple colors because it just fits so well! If you're looking for a comfy corduroy skirt, check this one out from Urban Outfitters!

Pumpkin Pie Cookies

Saturday, October 15, 2016

I got the inspiration for these adorable pumpkin pie slice cookies from Pinterest. They're just so perfect for fall and I will definitely be making them to go alongside a real  pumpkin pie for Halloween and Thanksgiving! These cookies are a basic sugar cookie recipe that my family uses every year to make Christmas cookies and are topped with the simple icing recipe we use with it. To add a little pumpkin flavor to your cookies try this recipe.

Sugar Cookie Recipe (makes about 30 cookies)

1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Pre-heat oven to 350. Cream sugar and butter until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add in dry ingredients slowly. Chill at least 1 hr. Roll out cookies and use a circle cutter (I used a pot lid), then cut the circle into 8 equal slices (this is easier if you use a pizza cutter). Bake for 7-10 minutes.

2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup butter
Milk to thin
1/2 tsp vanilla

Combine all ingredients, adding milk to get desired consistency. Separate icing into two bowls. Allow more icing for the orange color icing. To get that muted pumpkin color add more yellow drops then red and then add about a half teaspoon of cocoa powder. The frosting will not taste chocolaty but you will get that perfect pumpkin color!

For the "crust" icing add more powdered sugar so that it is stiffer in texture. To achieve the color use a little bit of yellow coloring and add about a 1/2 tsp of cocoa powder again.

Fill the entire top of the cookie with the pumpkin colored icing. Wait for it to set then pipe the frosting onto the outer top of the cookie in a zig-zag motion to achieve the look of a crust.

Additional ingredient: Store bought vanilla frosting. To get that perfect whipped cream dollop on each cookie, The icing will not work. Buttercream frosting can hold the shape but since the whipped cream dollop is so small, I decided to just use store bought Duncan Hines vanilla frosting! Make sure the frosting has been refrigerated before you scoop it into the piping bag! (I used a Wilton 22 tip). This way you will achieve that perfect dollop.

My good friend Leiya recently came into town to visit! We both absolutely adore all things Autumn so we just had to fit in some fall festivities together while she was down here! We headed out to a lovely pumpkin patch in La Jolla and stopped by the farmers market there too.The pumpkin patch we went to had a gorgeous assortment of pumpkins and even had a petting zoo with the cutest bunnies and ducklings!

Spooky Halloween Bar

Tuesday, October 11, 2016

Hanging Bats: Target // Candelabra: Target // Cauldron: Party City // Apothecary Bottles: Witches Aperitif & Dragon Spit // Skull: Target
I'm so excited to share another Halloween Party post with you guys! I thought this was a great idea for anyone who is throwing a Halloween party because it really adds that spooky aesthetic. This Halloween bar features one of my favorite Halloween props, dry ice! Dry ice can be added to any beverage, just make sure the ice is fully dissolved and stops bubbling before drinking the beverage! I made a "Witches Brew" Sangria and added the dry ice after pouring the beverage into the cauldron. When your guests ladle the brew into their glass it will have that eerie fog rolling off their drink!

Mauve Fall Makeup

Sunday, October 9, 2016

I'm so excited to share my very first makeup post with you all! This is my go-to look when doing my own makeup but it also my go-to when doing makeup on others because it looks stunning on a range of skin tones and works well on both younger and more mature faces. Mauve is my favorite makeup shade of all time, especially for the fall season, so what better first makeup look to share with you then this. I hope you all enjoy this makeup look for fall!

Here are the products I used to get this look:

Inner Corner and Brow Highlight: MAC Mineralize skinfinish in "Soft & Gentle"
Liner: Makeup Forever Eyeshadow in "Espresso" applied with dampened angled liner brush

Autumn at Suzie's Farm

Suzie's Farm, San Diego CA

Top: Abercrombie (similar) // Cardigan: Brandy Melville // Shorts: Urban Outfitters (similar) // Sneakers: Adidas
Living in San Diego, there're not many farms that are close enough to visit, but Suzie's Farm isn't too far from me so I decided to venture down there, pick some sunflowers, get some fresh produce and swing on their old fashioned wooden swings. It's so nice to get a way from it all and be in nature, listening to the roosters crow and seeing horses in their stables. I cannot wait for it to get cooler here so I can really enjoy the fall season!
